L.L. here, considering the question: what brings bloggers together? Among other things, beauty.
Poet Mary Karr says beauty drew her dysfunctional family together. “Poetry was the family’s religion. Beauty bonded us.”
Here at High Calling Blogs, we’re not looking to turn poetry into religion. But Karr’s observations about the beauty and bonding-power of poetry ring true. She notes that church language works similarly among believers. “Uttering the same noises in unison is part of what consolidates a congregation…” (from Sinners Welcome)
Every Friday, we offer the opportunity to utter the same noises together through the sharing of our poetry in Random Acts of Poetry. People have asked me how to participate. It’s simple. Just post a poem on YOUR BLOG, on any topic during the week and let me know about it through the HCB Contact Form (be sure to select my name) or through my personal blog.
At some point I pick a poem or ten to feature. Sometimes you might notice a particular theme. That would be if I’ve offered a prompt over at my blog. But, again, you can write on any topic and we’ll still link to you. (Of course we appreciate if you link to us in your RAP offering too. We also like it when you tag your post “High Calling Blogs” and “Random Acts of Poetry.”)
So, let the bonding begin. I look forward to hearing your beautiful voice.

So much Scripture is poetry. It can feel like an overwhelming form, like a pretentious form even, but it is in the roots of our faith.
In some ways, the poetry posts feel like a kind of liturgy around here. Thanks for what you are doing with that, L.L.!
You’re welcome.
Now, as to the thought on pretentiousness, I wonder what contributes to making any given poem feel that way.
dear l.l.
i am also glad that you do the rap.
i very well appreciate the Love, time and effort that you put into it.
do the rap…sound kind of like a new dance.
like a talking dance.
And I’m thinking, nAncY, that a dance is made complete by the presence of partners. Thanks for talk-dancing with us!
SOFT SCOOP
I’m wrestling with the ice cream
Inside this soft scoop box
My spoon is bent,my patience spent
I’m trying to outfox
The barrier before me
To get my just dessert
I’ll hack at that unyielding mass
No matter what the hurt.
But hey,where is my patience
Why don’t I let it melt
Surely it will taste the same
If time and me both dwelt
Perhaps this is my problem
Too hasty in my ways
A martha living in my skin
To be a Mary pays.
So if I wait upon The Lord
Instead of rushing it
And let us melt together
In a fusion,we will knit
A tasty time of bonding
And one that satisfies
Oh Lord,please give me patience
To delight in Your surprise.
