Frequently Asked Questions
Editor’s Note: This page is a work in progress. If you have questions to be answered, contact Marcus and mention that you think your question should be added to the FAQ page.
What is this site about? What high calling are you talking about?
HighCallingBlogs.com is a network of Christian sites who have said they are interested in thinking through the intersection of faith and work. We are part of the Foundations for Laity Renewal which include programs like TheHighCalling.org, Laity Lodge, Laity Lodge Youth Camp, Laity Lodge Family Camp, and Foundation Free Camps.
The Foundations for Laity Renewal believe people can (and should!) serve God through their daily work. For us, this is more often about the way people work, the excellence of their work and their working relationships. When we talk about work, we mean something more than just 9 to 5 office jobs. Certainly, work includes those kind of jobs. But daily work is broader than that. It includes stay-at-home parents as well as the traditional business person. It includes pastors as well as secular professions like public school teachers and doctors and lawyers.
Specifically, our vision for HighCallingBlogs.com is to use new media tools to create opportunities for people to encounter God for the transformation of daily live, work, and our world.
How do we contact you?
Our contact page is listed under the About menu. You can find it here.
How do I join the network?
You can read the five steps to joining the network here. Or you fill out the form to join.
What should I do once I join?
Read and comment, read and comment. We talk about some of the ways to do this in step 5 of the 5 Easy Steps to Join.
Where are the badges again?
You can find them in the About menu. Or just click here.
I’m having trouble loading the badges to a Wordpress blog.
You need to copy and paste the code into a text widget for your site’s sidebar. To edit your sidebar widgets, go to “Appearance” and click on “widgets.” There are a whole range of widgets to create from calendars to recent posts, recent comments, and RSS feeds. Click and drag the “Text” widget to the sidebar where you want it to appear. Give it a title like “HighCallingBlogs.com” or leave the title field blank. Paste the code for the HighCallingBlogs.com badge in the main field of the text widget. Click save, then go to the front end of your site to see how it looks!
I can’t get the badges to load in Blogger or Blogspot!
First, calm down and stop yelling. The Wordpress guy didn’t yell. (It’s true. We love Wordpress around here, but we love our Blogger friends, too. Marcus is just being silly.) Now, go to your blog dashboard/customize area. Click on the Layout tab and the page elements section. Choose “Add a New Gadget” in the sidebar. Then from the options scroll down and select that you want to create a text gadget. Create a text gadget and drop the code in there.
How do I get my picture to show up next to comments?
Our site uses gravatar to grab those images. We wrote a social media tips post about how to enable a gravatar.
Can I join the network if I’m not a Christian?
Sure. That’s like asking if you can go to church before you become a Christian. But you need to understand that we are a Christian community. That means you need to show respect to our beliefs and ideas. We are open to honest seekers, but evangelism is not the main goal of this community.
Why doesn’t my comment show up on HighCallingBlogs.com?
We screen all new commenters. Once your first comment is approved, future comments will go live automatically. We do this to help us catch spam comments.
What is the relationship between TheHighCalling.org and HighCallingBlogs.com?
TheHighCalling.org is an online magazine about faith and daily work. Each week, we publish new audio messages, new articles, a daily devotion by Mark D. Roberts, and blog posts by our editor-in-chief Dan Roloff (Ramblin Dan). HighCallingBlogs.com is a community of bloggers who are committed to the same vision of serving God through daily work. Some bloggers end up writing articles for TheHighCalling.org.
How can I write for TheHighCalling.org?
Unfortunately, we don’t have the staffing to deal with a lot of queries and unsolicited manuscripts. The best thing to do is join the blog network, get a sense of the vision, then (after you understand the vision of our site) contact Marcus.
