While wandering around my kid’s middle school yesterday I stopped to read a poster (likely left over from Halloween) displaying the results of a 6th grade poll on “My Favorite Scary Movie.” I was quite surprised to discover that the far-and-away favorite was “Saw.” Yes, this movie, which IMDB says is “rated R for strong grisly violence and language (edited for re-rating; originally NC-17),” and which most critics have labeled “torture porn.” At the risk of sounding like a prude: For God’s sake, who lets their 11-12 year olds watch such stuff? The mind reels.

Oh, you have no idea until you’ve dropped say three kids through the school system. Children watch EVERYTHING. Many parents have no filters at all. None.
I remember when my daughter was in 3rd grade. She was invited to a Spice Girls birthday party. Come dressed as your favorite spice girl. There was so much here that baffled me.
1. Why would they assume that every little girl has a favorite spice girl? My child had no idea who they were.
2. At the time, couldn’t we all, liberals and conservatives alike find reasons NOT to dress our little girls up as Spice Girls? Whether it’s to sexual or to exploitive or to much a sexual object. Who wants this as a model of womanhood for a child?
My little girl was still playing with dolls and horses. She didn’t go to the party.
