I’ve written before about how much I love Mavis Staples’ 2007 “We’ll Never Turn Back.” There’s something about Staples’ voice that just makes me believe.
In the liner notes, she writes about how her dad, Pops Staples, heard Martin Luther King Jr. speaking in 1963 and was encouraged to add songs of protest and social change to a repertoire that had up to that time been pure gospel. “If he can preach it, we can sing it,” Ms. Staples remembers her dad saying.
I realize I’m a few days late to honor Dr. King, but this reminds me of how acts of courage, great and small, lend strength and courage to others. For this, I am grateful.
