Vulgar, but entirely to the point

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

I Blame the Patriarchy gets my issues with third-wave feminists (or worse, those younger women who coyly disclaim the label):
Sexy feminists, there’s a lot more at stake with American feminism than exercising your right to bleach your asshole.

Some meditations on resurrection

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

From NIW,
and from Fred Clark, the Slacktivist.
Edited to add a nice little bit from Milton at Don’t Eat Alone:
When we were in Greece a couple of years ago, we arrived on the Saturday before Orthodox Easter and walked down from our hotel in Athens to the vigil that turned into celebration at midnight. One [...]

A budding poet

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

The kids and I went to a wildlife refuge this afternoon.  Something startled the 200+ geese on the water, and they rose in a cloud and dithered around the sky for a bit.  My older child said, “It looks like someone spilled a big glass of geese up there!”  And she was right!

“Don’t be a pious fool”

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Of all the bloggers I read regularly, Heather Armstrong at Dooce is the most fearlessly honest about her personal life, especially her mental health struggles. That’s one reason why it pains me to see even a small sample of the hate mail that people send her. It is so ugly and unnecessary, and [...]

Another bomb

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Or, if you will, one of my own hobby horses coming for a ride: from E.J. Dionne at the Washington Post, via Hullabaloo:

Too often wholly lacking in any sort of long-term exit strategy. Competitive to the point of lunacy, arrogant to the point of self-immolation.
I once worked for a company that [...]

Of “cowboyism” and “savage rapine”

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Cory Doctorow does have a way with words:
CEO of subprime mortgage broker fined $29,000 for dropping 73 f-bombs during deposition
Aron Wider, CEO of HFTC, a mortgage broker implicated in the subprime meltdown and embroiled in a lawsuit with GMAC Bank, was fined $29,000 after he said “fuck” 73 times during his deposition. The cowboyism of [...]

English and its ambiguous modifiers

If you bought a package of something labeled “Taco Cheese,” what would you expect?
I expected “cheese that would be good on tacos,” but what I got was “cheese with taco flavoring.”  I’m still scratching my head over that one.

It’s been a long, long seven years.

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

NPR called this “the most important speech of this campaign” this morning. I suspect it’s rather more than that. If you didn’t hear Barack Obama respond to the controversy surrounding his pastor Jeremiah Wright, read it and be amazed at the thought of a President who can comprehend and express himself on such [...]
