A Different Street

by Satchel Pooch

One of my kids went to the first meeting of a book club today.  Only three kids were there in total, and the other two are fundamentalist Christian homeschooled kids.  (We are nothing if not ecumenical here chez Pooch!)

Anyway, all went well until the time came to decide on a book for the next meeting.  My kid, who enjoyed “His Dark Materials” very much, suggested “The Golden Compass.”  Horror!  Both of the other kids began enthusiastically spouting the fundamentalist Christian line on this book.  Some of it is even somewhat defensible (Philip Pullman, the author, has made no secret of his atheism) but it was a bit disconcerting watching the propaganda machine at work.
