Women don’t run shit in corporate America because corporate America holds up high everything we hate about dudes. Obsessed with short-term thrills. Driven by them. Too often wholly lacking in any sort of long-term exit strategy. Competitive to the point of lunacy, arrogant to the point of self-immolation.
I once worked for a company that I thought had their management and HR head on pretty straight, except for the pesky little problem of not making any money. When the drain-circling started, I worried that when the fingers started pointing, some of them would be aimed at the company’s humane policies. (And in retrospect, for all I know that would have been correct, except I didn’t think so at the time.)
Now that corporate America is coughing up its lungs, I can see that everyone’s favorite hobby horse is going to come out for a spin on the reasons why. I’m not wholly convinced that having women in management positions would have averted this latest crisis, but hey, if we’re going to rebuild from the bottom up, that’s not a bad goal to aim at.
