A Different Street

I read a lot of book reviews, and of late I’ve noticed an interesting little quirk that many reviews seem to share: whenever the parents of an author or a biography subject are mentioned, they usually get two adjectives, e.g. “brilliant but troubled” mother, “difficult and distant” father.

This, of course, leads me to wonder what two adjectives reviewers will use to describe me, should either of my kids ever do anything review-worthy.

  1. You are asking a 10 ft pole question, one that few friends would dare take a chance on. Perhaps just the plus adjective, “Involved”, “Inspiring”….no buts or ands from this vantage.

  2. Oh no, I wasn’t expecting you to suggest adjectives — God forbid! It just amuses me to come up with words that describe the daily fluctuations. I think the best I can hope for is the “[negative] but [positive] formulation.
