Is the essence of humans, the ability to deal with containers,… boxes, bottles, wallets, bags, cargo containers, … categories, meta data….? Which came first, the physical invention of controlled spaces to hold things or the mental bins?
I recently was visiting friends with a small child, still in the stage of clear, learning fascination, with putting in, closing, opening, taking out a major component of play. Should this be a critical aspect of toy design or selection, multiple doors or tops, several spaces where things can be put.

There’s a great article in the current issue of The Economist on this very thing.
