Via tbogg, a NYTimes article about people assuming “Hussein” as a middle name in support of Barack Hussein Obama, or perhaps in protest against those who find inimical significance therein.

A triple split reaction,
oh to be young and crazy again, where such gestures seem to have meaning…
Or perhaps another reading of “The True Believer” (Eric Hoffer) about the psychology of mass movements and the nature of followers….
or perhaps drifting to the silly side, we really are in a Buffy/Angel universe of mind bending magic, demons in political office and dark conspiracy.
oh, and welcome back from vacation Satchel Hussein Pooch.===SHP, I think you need a vowel and another middle name.. AEIOUY, they all sound good, but maybe the E, Satchel Hussein Edith Pooch or Elaine, or Ethyl.

You know I thought it was silly at first, too, but upon further reflection I wonder if there isn’t something to it. The WingNuts keep raising the “His Name is Hussein” issue as though the mere fact of his ( I think ) beautiful middle name somehow makes him a Muslim (so what?) or a terrorist… or whatever nefarious thing it is that the name is supposed to represent.
So, if we are all “Hussein”, and we are clearly not all Islamists and/or terrorists, then… Sort of defuses the insult. Maybe?
OR …
‘member the scene in the movie “Spartacus” where the slaves all claim to be Spartacus? In that one act they both hid the identity of the “real” Spartacus (momentarily saving his life)and publicly identified with his ideals and his goals, thereby in a way truly becoming Spartacus. Personally, I find something emotionally satisfying in an act like that.
NEW husseIN WONDERLAND — I’m still not sure about it, but it’s worth thinking about.
WB, Pooch. I missed you, although I loved your friend’s posts, too.

Leonard Pitts Jr., whom I like a lot, wrote in this morning’s column (http://www.miamiherald.com/living/columnists/leonard_pitts/story/586100.html) that if the Muslims’ plans were to place a crypto-Muslim in the White House, “said Muslim would have blonde hair, blue eyes, flag pins out the wazoo and a name like Joe Smith.”
