A Different Street

One of the downsides of being somewhat sensitive to language, but not especially personally persuasive, is that one is aware of many things without being able to describe them to others. That’s why I’m so grateful to Digby for On Dogwhistles, which explains the deep ugliness inherent in a lot of right-wing political speech. When called on it, Republicans (and bullies generally) are masters of the innocent protestation “But all I said was … ” when you really know that they were communicating on another level. I’m grateful for having this particular instance explained so clearly.
